Macular degeneration is a major cause of visual impairment in adults and generally occurs in people who are over 50 years old. But smokers and individuals with a history of macular degeneration in their families have a greater propensity for the condition. At Mike Cees Opticians, we use advanced diagnostic tests to detect, monitor and manage age related macular degeneration. You can also rely on us for advice to help slow down the onset of this condition.
Types of macular degeneration
Dry macular degeneration
This is the most common type of macular degeneration. It occurs when the macula (the part of the eye that is receptive to light and sharp details) deteriorates as part of the body’s natural ageing process. Macular degeneration begins when fatty proteins accumulate in the retina. In the early stages, dry macular degeneration has few symptoms and the condition may occur in one eye only. If there is loss of vision in one eye, your perception may not be affected because your brain will process sharp details from the healthier eye.
Wet macular degeneration
This type of macular degeneration is less common and it occurs when blood vessels grow underneath the retina. These vessels may leak fluid or blood, which results in distortion of central vision. Usually, loss of vision with this type of macular degeneration occurs more rapidly and is more noticeable than dry macular degeneration.
Symptoms of macular degeneration
Hazy vision
Blurriness in your central vision (but normal peripheral vision)
Colours appear less vivid or bright
Trouble recognising faces
Difficulty adjusting your vision when going from bright light to low light
Need for increasingly bright light to see up close
